Doug started his junior career with Orangeville, Ontario and was on the 1938 Junior B Cjampionship team. He was also a member of the Minto Cup Mimico Mounties in 1938 before graduating to Etobicoke in the senior league. Doug had all the tools required of a good playmaker. He was an outstanding shooter, crafty playmeaker and strong on defense. He played with Owen Sound from 1946 - 1952, leading them to the Mann Cup in 1950 as a playing-coach. He also excelled in hockey; Doug was a member of the Owen Sound Mercuries, 1951 Allan Cup champions.
