Paul Gilkinson
Builder - Class of 2023

Paul Gilkinson has made an incredible career of coaching both men’s and women’s box and field lacrosse. His roles have also included administration and he has been an integral part of the lacrosse community for over 50 years.

Paul began his career playing box lacrosse and he began his coaching career in ‘70 with a youth box team whilst still playing lacrosse competitively. He continued coaching both at the minor and University level. In ‘78 together with his mother and brother, Stan started the first women’s field lacrosse program since the ‘30s.

He coached at the local, provincial, collegiate, and national level and was one of the assistant coaches for the inaugural Women’s World Championships Team Canada in 1982. During that time, he was also the head coach of the University of Toronto’s men’s field lacrosse club. Paul contributed directly to the success of 8 world championships, with roles ranging from assistant coach, game commentator, and timekeeper.

Paul’s achievements were met with many awards including the Ontario Women’s Field Lacrosse Award of Distinction, Bob Sloan Award, Contributions to Minor Lacrosse, and U20 Coach of the Year to name a few. Paul was inducted into the Ontario Hall of Fame in 1998 as a builder and in 2013, Paul joined the executive and served as a Museum Liaison and Museum Accessions Chair.

Without Paul, lacrosse would not be where it is today, especially for the women’s field game.
